PROCTER & GAMBLE AUSTRALIA PTY LTD officially came into existence in January 1989.

From 1985 when Procter & Gamble acquired Richardson-Vicks Inc, until January 1989, P&G operated in Australia through Richardson-Vicks. Richardson-Vicks was founded in the early 1890's when a country druggist, Lunsford Richardson, developed the Company's best known brand -VICKS VAPORUB.

VICKS products first appeared in Australia during the 1920's. The success and growth of these products led to the decision to begin manufacturing operations at Fairfield in 1956. In 1974 the Company moved to larger premises at Villawood. In mid 1985 (and after P&G's acquisition of Richardson Vicks) its headquarters operation moved back into the expanded and modernized Villawood complex. In July 1990 the headquarters operation moved to the Octagon Building in Parramatta. Following the 2001 Clariol acquisition from Bristol Myers Squibb, P&G moved to the Clairol manufacturing and office complex in Rydalmere in November 2002. The acquisition of Wella and the recent acquisition of Gillette will soon see the head office move to a new location and the manufacturing to Somersby on NSW Central Coast. P&G's pet food business, namely IAMS and Ekanuba are presently run through its Frenchs Forest office and may soon consolidate its premises with the rest of P&G in Sydney.
