External Relations
(Return to Functions Listing)

What Are We All About?

Our mission is to proactively manage, shape and leverage a positive external environment to build our brands and create advantage for the business. We also ensure the company’s full compliance with the letter and spirit of law, that the laws are applied fairly to the company and its assets are protected. We also help the company in identifying opportunities to lower the costs of operation in the field of taxation/tariffs/duties and operating expenses.

Where Could You Start?

You could begin your career in a Market Development Organization (country /regional operation)and will be made responsible for delivering and implementing an ER program or an element of the program which is part of an agreed ER strategy in the country/region. An "ER program" has a specific objective and is usually associated with a marketing or product initiative or ongoing "issue" in the external environment. The scope of this job encompasses Technical External Relations (TER), Legal and Public Affairs (PA). If assigned to TER, you could be made responsible for registering new products, maintaining existing ones, and ensuring all marketed products comply with local regulatory and environmental requirements. If assigned to Legal, you could be responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements of corporate existence and operations, primary licenses, permits and investor relations. You could be made responsible for protecting company assets by defending copy claims, trademarks and copyrights. If assigned to Public Affairs, you could be made responsible for creating market acceptance of P&G products by leveraging Brand PR and creating endorsements/tie-ups with the government, professional and trade/industry associations, academe, and other non-government organizations. You could establish key contacts with these groups in resolving key public issues affecting the business.

What Could Your Career Path Look Like In The Future?

Based on your performance, potential and leadership, you may progress to higher levels or may move from one area of specialty to another within the business unit. In these positions, you will be responsible for a more holistic and strategic design and development of ER programs, which support the overall objectives of the company. On top of just being the primary contact of specific government agencies, you will be expected to establish credibility that would allow P&G to influence product registration requirements and legislation. You would be able to anticipate and provide advance notice and assessment of impact of future legislation and also provide legal counseling to the organization. At this point as well, you could already be put in-charge of enhancing the company’s reputation, both internally and externally, as a committed partner in nation building/good corporate citizenship.
