Adil Ehsan - PAKISTAN - Assistant Brand Manager

Adil Ehsan

Job Title: Assistant Brand Manager
Function: Marketing
Department: Brand Manager
University: Institute of Business Administration, Karachi
Degree: MBA

Growing up I never thought I'd be a business manager let alone a marketing manager. Like any other kid all I wanted was to be a fighter pilot or soldier or pirate or something, anything 'exciting'. Business manager? A desk-man? No way! Of course as life goes on one realizes that you are probably better suited for other things and we make choices in life that take us in a different direction versus where we started out for – i.e. we grow up. Starting out in college I was convinced I wanted to be an investment banker, I saw the work as hard fast and exciting. Long hours for big paybacks. But a funny thing happened in college. I learned about something called marketing and business strategy, and realized that this was what I wanted to do. Marketing, and especially FMCG marketing at P&G was a job opportunity that I found gave me back something I thought I wouldn't be able to get back… a childish sense of adventure about my job. Suddenly I could be a pirate captain about to launch a new product that would destroy a false sense of security among "stodgy stuck-in-the-mud" competitors. I could be a wise general making a plan of attack as to how to recover and turn around a brand's fortunes after a competitor re-launch. Or I could be an explorer, creating and building a new category in a country where no one knows what your product exactly is let alone how good it might be. You work hard and you play harder, you bring a sense of adventure and attitude to your work that keeps you on the edge and excited and thats what makes working at P&G fun. Day to day management duties get you down, real life occurs.... But every once in a while you get to embark on a flight of fantasy and be a dare-devil marketer and that brings to life the fun about working in P&G brand.

What I like most about P&G:

That we care more about "what works" versus "what has always been done".

What I think could be better at P&G:
We are very process oriented and forget that creativity/break through solutions come when you start getting out of processes and focus on the objective.
