Omer Awan - PAKISTAN - Distribution Center Operations/OSB Manager

Omer Awan

Job Title: Distribution Center Operations/OSB Manager
Function: Logistics
Department: Customer Service
University: Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences

From the first day I came to P&G as an intern in May 1999 till now, I have always seen the company on the move striving to be better and better. The passion with which the P&G employees learn, innovate and find solutions to problems has always been the source of inspiration for me. Customer Services as a department can be thought of as the wheels of P&G. Since we are the operations part of the business, what excites me about working here is the unique problems that we come across everyday. Things are computer-based everywhere in the company, but here you deal with the physical goods. Actions, which look easy on a computer, take time to be completed in reality and every action has its own unique learnings. When I came to P&G for an internship I thought it would be a typical internship with no value-added work, just some random photocopying and getting tea for my boss. But, I was in for a surprise. A ten-week hectic schedule had already been planned by my manager with seven projects, deadlines and concrete deliverables. By the end of the ten weeks I already thought of myself as a part of the P&G family. I felt really elevated when I saw some of my projects actually being implemented and being used for the business. The internship still remains one of the best learning experiences of my life. The best thing about the internship was the job offer I got one month before my graduation. When I joined the company I was posted as the Distribution Center Manager. This requires me to manage three different physical sites of around two hundred thousand square feet of storage space. I also have to manage nine people who directly reported to me. Initially this seemed about as easy as climbing Mount Everest! J But, in a few weeks alone I started feeling comfortable with the situation and the challenges that are par for the course. The continuous coaching by my line manager, the team-work and every day's experiences leave me more and more confident that I’m ready to succeed no matter what the next challenge I face.

What I like most about P&G:

Its a dynamic organization which is always on the move!
