US Info | Diversity | African American

P&G works hard to attract, recruit, retain and develop minority talent. Over the past five years, we have doubled the number of women and US minorities at the vice-president/general manager level.

Our intent is to develop all employees to their full potential through on-going professional and personal support, internal and external support systems and through on-going training and relationship-building within the company. For more information, review some of our resources.

There are numerous support systems, networks, and organizations both internally at P&G and externally that are created to make it easier for African Americans to focus on their careers and integrate their personal life.

Black Women Managers Network within the Product Supply organization
(Health Care/Beauty Care). Other GBU's also have a network, but we are providing this example.

Our objectives are as follows:

  • Influence the future for black women in Health Care and Beauty Care
  • Develop skill sets to perpetuate the success and advancement of black women in Health Care and Beauty Care
  • Enable black women to develop mastery of career/personal development systems
  • Provide a forum to share ideas, gain perspective
  • Provide a forum to build relationships and to network with Health Care/Beauty Care hierarchy, immediate manager, work peers and other Black women
  • Provide recognition for the accomplishments and skills of individual women and the network

Black Advertising Leadership Team (BALT)
Building community professionally and personally

BALT is the Procter & Gamble organization that consists of African Americans in marketing. BALT is currently 40 members strong and continues to be an entity that makes marketing at P&G special. It fosters a comfortable work environment, a sincere avenue for advocacy, relevant training, and an enjoyable social outlet.

  • Comfortable Environment - Diversity is embraced throughout P&G. African American marketers are in every Global Business Unit and business category. Another African American is always close by, so you don’t feel like the only one.
  • Advocacy - BALT serves as an additional support system. Marketing Directors and Brand Managers take the initiative to mentor and coach less senior members, helping them succeed. This professional interest overlaps with personal friendships creating sincere advocates.
  • Training - P&G has the best training and development in brand management and general manager leadership. We now have a corporate team committed to Marketing University curriculum to train our people at all key levels—New Hire, ABM, Brand Manager and Marketing Director.
  • Individual Success - BALT has a special interest in individual success and has structured informal & formal training to proactively help you go farther in your career. Twice a year BALT schedules an off-site to provide training for each marketing level. This training compliments P&G’s existing training regimen, and individual help with daily on-the-job development.
  • Social Benefits - BALT members often go out during the weekends, share social event information, and build friendships that extend beyond the workplace. The training events also include a social portion that reinforces the advocacy. The combination of social networking and professional development increases job fulfillment.

Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (CGSM)

CGSM is an alliance of the leading American business schools in partnership with the corporate community, is to encourage and enable the largest possible number of the best and the brightest African American, Hispanic American and Native American college graduates to pursue successful careers in management. P&G has supported the CGSM from the beginning. P&G attends the annual Orientation Program, and has active members on the Corporate Advisory Board.

National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA)

NBMBAA is dedicated to creating partnerships that result in creating intellectual and economic wealth in the black community. In partnership with over 400 of the country’s top business organizations, the association has inroads into a wide range of industries as well as the public and private sector.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

NSBE is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

Mentoring

There are many types of mentoring systems in place here – everything from business coaching to cultural mentoring. Every new employee is provided a business coach. This would be someone in their area of expertise who can help them with their career.

More importantly, we have African American networks in place that are dedicated to making your recruiting and on-boarding process as easy as possible, as well as our "Beginnings" new hire on-boarding process. A member of one of our African American Networks will contact you once you are offered a position with P&G. Many times, you will already know the Network Contact from your interview visit with P&G. Your Network Contact will play a much different "mentoring" role than your business coach. He/She can provide cultural information to help you make a good decision on your P&G offer or provide information needed once you accept our offer to help get you and your family acclimated to P&G. We find that in many cases this is the most important aspect of mentoring. How do I find a church, a restaurant, personal salons, or which school or neighborhood will make my children feel included? These are some of the questions the Network Contact can help you with. Network Contacts are all African American volunteers who manage important businesses at P&G, but they know how important these questions are and want to assure they are answered.

So, what type of support can you expect at P&G? Great support that will help with your special needs or those of your family. Our charter is to help African Americans succeed at P&G.
