Sanford Tom

Background:
During my P&G career, I've moved around a lot and have pursued a lot of different assignments. I did this to fulfill my potential, and it’s been a real adventure. What other company would have given me the chance to live in different parts of the world and experience new cultures? From a personal perspective it’s been great. Overall I would say that the company, because of its scale, has allowed me to be energized and refreshed in my 22 year career. I was able to do different things every few years without ever leaving P&G.

History:

  • Born and raised in Hawaii.
  • Joined P&G 22 years ago.
  • Transferred to Cincinnati 13 years ago. For me, the environment was very different: 3 piece suits, ties, overcoats, the works! So I sought out mentors to help me develop professionally within the company culture.
  • Now I participate in helping cross-cultural employees with activities like an annual meeting every June, a cultural traits learning presentation, a conference every year, new networks, and just plain creating awareness.
  • I currently work in the global skincare business. After the US, our biggest territory is China.
  • As we grow our business globally, we are going to have to understand how to address different product needs and how to develop our employee potential in the context of different cultures. I think this is an opportunity especially for talented people who can help build the bridge between East and West.
